On Saturday 2nd March 2019 Flo & Frankie hosted its first Beach Clean Up Event in collaboration with Our Seas Our Future (OSOF). OSOF is a volunteer organisation which addresses how our current interactions with the environment, will shape the world we are living in tomorrow (the health of our seas is intertwined with our future).
Our Clean Up saw the collection of around 1000 litres of plastic along the shoreline, and surrounding dunes of Sumner Beach in Christchurch.
Each year an estimated 3 million tonnes of plastic are dumped into our oceans, with 46,000 pieces of plastic per square mile at the seas surface. Our beautiful marine environment and all those who call it home are being adversely impacted, one million sea birds and 100,000 marine mammals are killed annually from plastic in our oceans.
Our Seas Our Future has branches in Auckland, Hawkes Bay, Wellington, Christchurch & Dunedin. If this type of event is something you’d be interested in, check out their social media accounts to stay updated on future volunteer opportunities & get involved.
This blog was written by the lovely Ruby De Grut (OSOF), who was our first 2IC in our Merivale store, in Christchurch. A big thank you to her for organising the event, and for writing this post!
